Medieval Florence - Productive Activities
The principal industry was that involving wool which gave work to a third of the population in around 200 workshops.
There were about 80 exchange banks, 600 notary publics, 60 doctors and surge6ns, 46 bakers, and hosiers, shoemakers, masons and carpenters etc.
At the end of the third decade of the fourteenth century, according to various documents, the city counted 57 parishes within and without the walls in addition to the chapter of the Cathedral and that of San Lorenzo.
To these must be summed the 53 convent churches, any number of small oratories and 24 convents with nuns.
The ties between lay and religious activities were much closer than can be imagined today.
The church was the public site for large meetings but also for daily encounters of lesser or greater duration.
