History of Impruneta, a small Village near Florence

Impruneta derives from the latin “in pinetis” and this tells a lot about the surrounding green area. The peaceful hills have been inhabited since Etruscan times. During the Middle Ages they were property of the Buondelmonti family where the castle in the village of Montebuoni was located.

At the beginning of the 12th century, Florence began to destroy the surrounding castles and to dominate the nobile inhabitants. For Dante, the urbanization by the Buondelmonti family represented a great tragedy for Florence. In fact, this family was considered responsible for the division between the Guelfs and the Ghibellines, whose feud stained Florence with blood for many years.

In the meantime, the church of Santa Maria of Impruneta had been recognized for its sacred image of the Virgin Mary and because its parish served 21 churches. In the second half of the 13th century, Florence charged a major with the administration of the diocese. In 1415, the constitution was written.

The small village, Impruneta, developed around the church and was important in ceramic production. The surrounding hills also developed. Impruneta was severely damaged during World War II. The church was also bombed and was later restored.
