History of Scandicci near Florence, Tuscany
The first document that mentions the name of Scandicci goes back to 798 and concerns an official act in which Countess Willa Di Toscana gave the castle of Scandicci as a present to the Florentinian Abbey, that she founded. From the second half of the 10th century the near abbey of San Salvatore gained such increasing importance that Florence decided to invest it with more public power and the area was reclaimed.
The municipality was created in the 18th century together with the towns of Casellina and Torri and it maintained double designation until 1929, when the municipalities of Casellina and Torri were abolished and at the same time the municipality of Scandicci was constituted as we see it today.
In the 60s Scandicci had a staggering demographic growth and the population increased by 150% in ten years; this caused such a big urban development that the town merged with the outskirts of Florence. In the last decades the chief town has turned into a top level industrial centre (clothing, pharmaceutical products, food industry, leather goods, shoes, etc.).
