Things to See in Scandicci near Florence, Tuscany

One of the most fascinating building of this territory is the 10th century Abbey of San Salvatore a Settimo, originally surrouded by walls with towers. The church has a romanesque layout with nave and three aisles covered by a trussed roof and shows terracotta frames, a big rose window at the centre of the austere facade. In the inside there is the crypt with two precious medallions by Domenico Ghirlandaio and a tabernacle by Giuliano Da Maiano.

In the delightful area surrounding Scandicci there are other romanic churches:
The old S. Andrea A Mosciano with an elevated presbytery and crypt; S. Giuliano A Settimo, that has got a nave and three aisles layout and three apses.

The parish country church S. Alessandro A Giogoli which goes back to the 12th century and that exposes in the parsonage a fresco by Ridolfo Ghirlandaio.

The parish country church of San Martino Alla Palma, with a beautiful portico of 1500 and next to a bell tower in gothic style that was built after the church.

It is worth seeing the small fortresses dated back to the early Middle Ages, turned into villas like:
The castle of Acciauolo in Casellina, with crenelated walls and towers;

The villa of Castelpulci in Viottolone, old fortified residence owned by the Pulci family, later transformed into an aristocratic villa by the Riccardi family;

The villa of Torrigiani of 1500 with its beautiful garden in San Martino Alla Palma; the impressive Villa I Collazzi A Giogoli, designed by Santi Di Tito on an original plan attributed to Michelangelo.
