Historical Buidlings in Scaperia in the Province of Florence
Palazzo dei Vicari (Vicariary Building): built in the 14th century, it still has got the impressive original structure, even if it has been enlarged and modified many times over the centuries. On its left side stands the 42 meters high crenelated tower attributed to Arnolfo Di Cambio. On the facade and in the atrium there are hundreds of coat of arms belonging to the Vicars that followed one another over the years. On the first floor it is worth seeing the room that was previously used as a chapel.
Oratorio della Madonna di Piazza (Oratory of Madonna Di Piazza): built in the 12th century. In the inside: the 1300 representation of “Madonna col bambino e gli angeli” (Madonna with the Child and angels). According to the tradition this was the venue for the oath of allegiance of the Vicariate.
Propositura dei SS. Jacopo e Filippo (Provostry of SS. Jacopo and Filippo): built in the 14th century by the order of the Augustinians. It maintained the original cloister with a beautiful colonnade with Roman arches supported by Ionic columns. The aisleless church has had many modifications and restorations over the years.
Oratorio della Madonna dei Terremoti (Oratory of the Madonna of Earthquakes): built in the 15th century.
Oratorio della Madonna del Vivaio (Oratory of the Madonna del Vivaio): built in the 18th century.
Cinta Muraria ( old walls): remains of the 1300 and 1500 wall circles.
Museo dei Ferri Taglienti (Museum of the Sharp Iron Tools): located inside the Vicariate Building, it exposes blades of any kind and manufacture and a photographic documentation about the art of knife production.
Pieve Romanica di S. Agata (Roman Parish Country Church of S. Agata): it lies in a small town about 4 km away from Scarperia. It can be traced back to the 12th century and it is one of the most beautiful parish churches of Mugello. It has a one nave and two aisles layout, even if the columns that directly support the roof without arches give the idea of an aisleless structure. Inside there are beautiful works of art, among which many frescoes and the baptismal font.
Near Compagnia di S. Jacopo there is an exhibition about sacred art (Raccolta di arte sacra), while in the area close to the church it is possible to visit an exposition about Rural and Artisan life by Faliero Lepri, known as Leprino (Mostra di vita artigiana e contadina di Faliero Lepri detto Leprino), that describes everyday life scenes by using animate characters.
Pieve di Santa Maria a Fagna (Parish Country Church of S. Maria A Fagna): it lies about 2 km away from Scarperia, along Via Fiorentina. At present it has a late baroque aspect due to the radical interventions in 1770 that have almost completely changed the original structure, with the exception of the apse. The church has a nave and two aisles layout and the central nave has been elevated so that it is higher than the two aisles.
