Things to see in Signa in the Province of Florence

In the upper part of Signa, where the Castle was located, there are still parts of the 14th century walls with crenellated towers and two entrance gates. The Church of Santa Maria in Castello is located here. It contains a Madonna with Child attributed to Lorenzo Monaco and an Adoration of the Magi by Coccapani.

In the lower part of Signa, there is the Parish Church of Saint John the Baptist, also called the Blessed, because it preserves the remains of Blessed Giovanna da Signa, an object of great devotion in this area. The apse is frescoed with Stories of the Blessed Giovanna: the paintings on the left side are by a pupil of Bicci di Lorenzo and those on the right side are by Maestro di Signa.

The Oratory of San Lorenzo or the Old Parish is outside of the city centre. It dates back to the 9th century, but was rebuilt in the 12th century along with the bell tower. The interior is ornated with a series of 14th century frescoes of the Florentine school, a noteworthy pulpit in inlaid marble and the chest of the Blessed Giovanna, painted in 1437 by a certain Pietro di Gambassi.

The Museum of Straw and Weaving is of interest, unique in Italy and among a few in Europe. It documents the history and production of straw manufacture from the 1700’s to the present.
