Things to see in Vaglia in the Province of Florence
The Parish Church of San Pietro in Vaglia: The original structure of the parish must have had three naves and architectural elements which today have disappeared. Its present aspect is due to many restorations over the centuries up to the 1700’s. Of interest: a wooden crucifix attributed to Giambologna, paintings by Domenico Pugliani and Lorenzo Lippi a processional cross of the 1600’s.
The Sanctuary of Montesenario: Founded in the 13th century by seven Florentine merchants (the seven founding fathers of the Order of the Serves of Maria). The 15th century church had been restructured many times before retaining its present baroque aspect. It contains two paintings by Tommaso Redi.
Worth a visit are: the Chapel of the Seven Founding Saints, the Sacristy, the Chapel of S.Manetto, the primitive facade of the church, the 15th century cloister, the panoramic terrace, the cistern and the refectory. Pathways in the woods: the “Via matris” arrives at the sanctuary by way of seven tabernacles) and the caves used by the Fathers for prayer.
The Medici Park of Villa Demidoff: An estate acquired by the Granduke Francesco de’ Medici in 1569 and who entrusted Bernardo Buontalenti with the project for the villa (demolished following the Lorena). Of interest are the magnificent park with caves and fountains, standing out among these is the statue-fountain of the Appennine, conceived by Giambologna and the hexagonal chapel, supported by 14 stone columns with a laminated lead dome.
The Parish of San Cresci in Macioli: the Romanic bell tower dates back to 1279 and the parish was completely restored in 1448 by the Neroni family. The interior has three covered trestled naves, divided by seven chanelled columns and enriched by an antique organ and a 15th century baptismal basin.
San Romolo in Bivigliano: a church anterior to the year 1000, with a solo nave and a semicircular apse. It contains a glazed terracotta altar piece by Andrea della Robbia. Near the baptismal basin there is a 15th century wooden S. John the Baptist.
The Bibigliano Villa: a typical example of 16th century architecture on the remains of an ancient castle. Of interest: the famous artificial cave from 1690.
