La festa di San Giovanni (24 Giugno) - Firenze in Toscana

 

San Giovanni Battista, patrono di Firenze, secondo antiche testimonianze lo diventò già in età lombarda. La figura del Santo ha dominato per secoli nella città, che gli ha sempre tributato solenni onoranze religiose e civili, mirate anche ad affermare la potenza di Firenze davanti al mondo intero; in onore a San Giovanni Battista fu eretto anche il Battistero. Anticamente gli araldi bandivano i festeggiamenti nei punti principali della città, mentre i nobili e i signori venivano avvisati per l'obbligo dell'offerta, consistente in ceri e pali. Una parte delle candele donate a San Giovanni doveva poi ardere per tutto l'anno nel Battistero.

 

Con l'aumentare della potenza di Firenze, i ceri divennero enormi e sempre più riccamente adornati. Ancora oggi, la mattina del 24 Giugno un breve corteo da Palazzo Vecchio si reca ad offrire i ceri al proprio patrono. Ma l'evento che attira maggiormente i fiorentini si tiene la sera sul Piazzale Michelangelo: si tratta dei "fuochi" di San Giovanni, lo spettacolo pirotecnico che richiama una grande folla, concentrata soprattutto sui Lungarni. Lo spettacolo dura un'ora circa e termina con un forte "botto" finale.
