La lavorazione della pietra serena - Firenze in Toscana

 

Filippo Brunelleschi fu il primo architetto a fare largo uso, a Firenze del materiale grigio-azzurro denominato pietra serena. Colonne, cornici, archi, portali, un utilizzo sia in interno che in esterno, e che veniva a contrapporsi alla pietra forte, fino ad allora utilizzata nella città di Firenze. Sulle colline di Fiesole, Monte Ceceri, Maiano, Settignano si trovavano le cave di questa pietra arenaria, che trovando largo impiego anche con i successori di Brunelleschi connotò in modo inconfondibile Firenze.
La pietra serena si cava ancora oggi nel Mugello, in particolare nell'area di Firenzuola, mentre le cave intorno a Fiesole sono ormai chiuse.

 

Nella città mugellana la tradizione artigiana degli scalpellini si è evoluta in una importante realtà industriale e la pietra serena viene utilizzata tanto nell'edilizia quanto nel restauro. Tuttavia recentemente sono stati studiati e sperimentati utilizzi della pietra azzurrina anche nel campo del design e del complemento d'arredo, con interessanti risultati di creatività. La città mugellana di Firenzuola onora la tradizione delle cave e della lavorazione della pietra serena nell'omonimo museo, allestito nei sotterranei della Rocca; mentre le realizzazioni artigianali e le realtà industriali più significative espongono in Ottobre, nella variopinta manifestazione denominata Dal bosco e dalla pietra.
